Senior Thesis (Evoke)
The assignment called “Evoke” it is our opportunity to flex everything we’ve learned in Motion Design. It could be any story, any medium, and any design style.
The Objective
The objective for this project was to create a 2D animated story that reflects some part of my personal life.
Final Outcome
The grand finale!!!!!
Experimental Design Alternatives
Explore different design style, for our final project.
Going into this, I had a feeling that I would end up making something closest to option 1, but seeing “multiple right answers” was helpful not only for me but also for my production adviser.
Instead of experimenting with just one design style from the start, I kept my options open and try out multiple design approaches and techniques.
Story Alternative 01
Finding a place to belong.
This was the first story that was created.
The story had good bones, and cute anthropomorphic animals are my strong suit. However, I was having trouble connecting with the project and feeling passion for creating it.
So, I made the slightly controversial decision to switch my story to something I knew would be better.
Story Alternative 02
After taking the time to think of a better story, while I was on the phone with my mom, I got struck with this idea.
It's a feeling that we are all too familiar with: just needing to talk to someone about what’s going on in life.
With this new direction, I felt much more confident moving forward with the project.
Connection to family
Process
Speed paint Compilation.
The meat and potatoes
Although not every single part was going to be animated by hand, I wanted to maintain the hand-drawn aesthetic. So every single scene was drawn by hand in After Effects.
The drawing process consisted of: resketching the storyboard for more detail, doing a value drawing first, and then coloring the piece.
